Consider the Kids
It’s a stressful time for everyone when moving house. Whilst adults are busy worrying over choosing the right solicitor, mortgage or box supplier the kids are probably equally worried about making new friends, leaving old ones behind, changing schools and a whole bunch of other issues. Moving home can cause serious issues if not addressed properly. Generally younger kids cope far better with moving home than the older ones, who require a different approach. Here we offer a few ideas in helping you to keep your children feel secure, reassured and involved in your move.
Involvement
Experts say that the earlier you tell your children they are moving the better.
- Involve all the family early by asking hypothetical questions, such as where their ideal home would be. Emphasise the positive aspects of moving home.
- Take all the family regularly to the new house, at different times of the day, and point out exciting aspects of their new area.
- Wherever possible allow them to choose their own room.
- If the move involves a change of school, be sure to take them to visit the school regularly.
Youngsters
When moving with young children explain to them exactly what is happening and what to expect on moving day. Let them pack some of their own boxes, especially ones with soft toys in and try to make it fun. Always maintain a positive attitude regarding the move and settle them into their new room early so that they feel secure. Let them choose a couple of toys to take with them, as their own Survival Pack.
Older Kids
As with all the family keep them fully informed and explain what is happening and why. Allow them to choose and decorate their new room wherever possible. Do not try to convince them how much they will like their new friends and neighbours, let them find out for themselves! Involve them early in sorting out and packing their own things, it will be a good opportunity to de-clutter!
