If you are organising your own move make sure that you have arranged for a hire van, if you are using a removal service ensure that they are reputable and fully insured. Make full use of our checklist to ensure that all aspects of your move are planned and well organised.

Go to your bank and pick up a change-of-address form. You may also be able to do this by phone or on-line.

With reference to Standing Orders inform the bank and the organizations that receive your money, Notify your credit card company as well.

Call your Vehicle insurers or insurance company seven days before you move to ensure your cover remains valid.

National Insurance/DSS – Inform the local office of your full name, date of birth and National Insurance number.

Inform your employer of your move; your wages office will know the address of your tax offi ce that you must also inform.

Relatives and Friends may have heard about your plans or maybe you have just lost touch and see this as a golden opportunity to resume contact. Go through your personal directory and send off change of address cards.

Notify your Gas and Electricity suppliers as far in advance as possible. Find out the charge for disconnecting gas appliances that you are taking with you and make an appointment. If you are moving within your gas region, your current region will transfer the paperwork and arrange disconnection at the other end but if you are going out of your region, you will have to contact the new area yourself. However, reading your own meter for the final reading is normally accepted.

Pay your Milkman’s bill up until the moving day and then tell your Milkman to cancel your service. To ensure delivery at the other end, ring the new dairy in advance with your start date.

To re-direct your Mail please be aware that The Royal Mail needs seven days notice. Forms are available at your post office.

Get your telephone number changed as soon as possible so that you can include your new number on your address cards.

Inform the Television License Board of your new Address.

Discontinue your newspapers and magazines and send in changes on subscription.

TV/Video/DVD Rental

Find out which appliances can be taken to your new area and which ones must be turned in and re-entered. Accounts with the major appliance rental fi rms can usually be transferred to the branch nearest to you.

Vehicle Registration

Complete the relevant section on the reverse side or at the bottom of your registration document and send to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Centre, Swansea, SA99 1AR or ring 0870 2400010.

Driving License

Complete the relevant section on your license and send to the Driver Vehicle Licensing Centre, Swansea SA99 1AR. This takes at least two weeks so you may want to leave it until you have moved.

House Contents Insurance

Often this insurance is offered at the same time as your mortgage, in which case it will be sorted out before the move.

Life Insurance and Pensions

Send your change of address cards off to the relevant companies. You may want to take this opportunity to check your policy and see whether it still suits your needs.

Write to your new Local Authority for an information pack about schools in the area. If you can, do extra research into which schools are best suited for your children. Meanwhile, notify the current school’s head teacher of your child’s leaving date.

De-register and re-register with the new doctor as soon as possible. To find a new doctor, ring the Community Health Council in your area. Women are entitled to a female doctor.

De-register and re-register with the new dentist as soon as possible.

Explain to your optician that you are moving and request the results and dates of your last eye test to give to your new optician.

Transfer your pet’s records to a new vet.

Notify the Local Authority at either end of the move so that your local rates are transferred to the new occupant of your old home, and so you pay the correct tax in your new home.
