Moving Tips
The sooner you start packing the better it will be in the long term. Everybody hates this job so get the whole family to join in and do their bit! If you do leave it to the last minute then you will leave yourself with a mountain to climb and that is when you’ll get stressed!
Because no one can say exactly when contracts will be exchanged people often think that they cannot start packing. In reality, however, there are lots of things that can be packed at an early stage. What about the attic? The garage, the shed, the clothes that are out of season, household items that are only used rarely, Books, DVDs or CDs?
By starting early you also give yourself the chance to de-clutter and get rid of those un-wanted things, then at least you don’t have to unpack them at your new house! If you are doing your own move make sure that you have arranged for a hire van, if you are using a removal service ensure that they are reputable and fully insured.
Make full use of our checklist to ensure that you inform your bank and other financial services as well as the council and other utility service providers.
If you need to register with a new Doctor, Dentist and Optician be sure to inform the ones you leave behind! Don’t forget the animals, as you will need to find and register with a new Vet. Keep up to date with all your bills and don’t forget to inform the Milkman, Window Cleaner and Newsagent of your move. Send out change of address notes to family and friends.
Be sure to keep all moving related documents together and ensure other important documents are stored safely. Whilst packing make sure that you mark all boxes by room and a brief description of the contents. On the day before moving pack your ‘Survival Kit’ Check the house to ensure everything has been taken into account and that nothing has been overlooked. Defrost fridge and freezer.
On the Big Day
- Strip beds. Take care when packing linen to keep it together in a separate box for easy accessibility for the new house.
- Make sure that you have arranged to clean the house (or have it cleaned!) ready for the new owners.
- Disconnect all remaining appliances.
- Take down curtains and blinds.
- Check over the house (inside and out) for the final time.
- Close and lock all doors and windows.
The New Home
Clean and make up the beds.
Get older children to organize their own room! And try to keep younger ones and pets in a room out of the way with some toys.
Unpack your survival kit, have a brew (not forgetting the removal team!). Try to keep calm and relaxed. Enjoy!
Confucius Say
‘Never assume that any aspect of a house move will be taken care of by someone else.’
Check, check again and then get it confirmed. (preferably in writing!)
